Frequently asked questions
Wax melts are small, scented pieces of wax. You place one or two segments of a bar, or an individual melt into tea light or electric wax melt warmer. As the warmer gently heats and liquefies the wax, the fragrance oils within the wax release a wonderful aroma. Unlike candles, the wax itself does not evaporate—only the fragrance held within the wax does.
On average, a single wax melt segment provides approximately 8 to 12 hours of good fragrance release, depending on the size of the room and the type of warmer you use. The hotter the wax the more intense the sent and the more quickly it will be used up. Once you can no longer smell the scent, it is time to change your melt and discard of the used wax.
Melt warmers (often called melt burners) have a well at the top which warms your wax. They can be electric, or tea light with which the flame heats the wax well from underneath. Generally we find that electric burners are slightly cooler than tea light ones which means your scent can be less strong but we have many customers who use both.
Please note: Oil tea light burners look very similar to wax melt burners but should not be used if they are too small. Oil burners have a well at the top and you put water into it, and then a few drops of fragrance or essential oil on the top. Often oil burners are only apx 8cm tall meaning the flame is much closer to the top well and this allows it to heat the water sufficiently. This setup is too hot for wax melts. It will heat the wax too intensely, you'll get a super strong smell for a shorter time and then nothing. With some waxes you can even end up smelling a hot waxy smell, we discovered this when we were first trialling waxes for MoonSmith and we've had customer tell us about experiencing this with melts they have bought elsewhere. Generally though, it's the burner that's the issue. Aim for a 11-12cm tall apx wax melt warmer.
We proudly use premium, professionally blended fragrance oils which allow us to offer a wide variety of scent profiles from fresh clean airy notes to warming spiced aromas. Fragrance oils are specially formulated to be complex and long-lasting and hold their scent brilliantly during the entire melting process. They are also formulated and assessed fully in compliance with IFRA guidelines with instructions on safe amounts to use in all manor of different items.
We love essential oils, we don't currently use them and have no immediate plans to, but we may develop a range in the future.
Burner choice - always use a suitable burner and tea light Your burner should be a full size wax burner (not a smaller oil burner) and check it regularly for cracks or any damage that might affect it.
Tealights - Always use a 4 hour unscented tea light only. 8 hour tea lights are larger and burn hotter meaning the wax can be a hotter temperature than we would like.
Position - Place your burner / warmer on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, children, and pets. Place your burner on a heatproof stand if your type of burner feels warm at the base. Don't place your burner on a book shelf or any area where there is another item or surface directly above. We also advise not to have your burner in any drafts as the flame can be unstable and not warm the wall evenly. Never leave a burning or switched-on warmer unattended. Do not carry a burner full of hot wax, it can cause severe burns.
Scent safety - Please don't mix scents and clean out your burner between uses (see changing wax section). Please use in a room big enough that you can enjoy a lovely flow of scent without being overpowered.
Our fragrance oils are cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.
Generally we don't expect any issues with our wax melts around pets. Certain essential oils can have natural ingredients that can be toxic to certain animals and this isn't the same with fragrance oils. However, some pets (like cats and dogs) can be sensitive to strong home fragrances. We recommend melting scents in well-ventilated areas, keeping warmers out of reach of animals, and consulting your vet if you have specific concerns about your pet's respiratory sensitivities. Make sure your burner especially with a tea light is not in any area where a pet can touch it, have their tail in the flame, knock over the wax etc.

We are hoping to reintroduce candles soon.
We spent a long time developing our candle range to make sure they smelt amazing both unlit and lit. Often candles have a fantastic cold throw but the hot throw isn't strong and we wanted to get that right.
Once e'd perfected our candle line we did rigorous fire safety testing
